Dear Pores and Acne Scars: If you are going to live on my face, I need to see some rent.
I think about this every morning when I look in the mirror. I want better skin and to look younger and more refreshed but not like I’ve had anything more than a facial. I was kind of having one of those days where I just didn’t like anything: clothes, hair, shoes, bag and the longest standing relationship I have ever had, my skin, which also bears the scars of my war with acne as a teenager.
I went into this skin care regimen with no real expectations. I’ve seen and tried what seems like a hundred things claiming to make you look younger and that your skin is going to glow. We are inundated with pictures and images everywhere. It’s almost like you can’t escape it with social media and the dreaded Instagram. The harsh reality is (I always say, I would rather be hurt by the truth than comforted by a lie), I am 35 and single. Glowing skin, or lack thereof, has not gotten me what I want. So, I turned to the SkinPen®. This thing better had better change my life. #swiperight
What did I have to lose? A lot.
I could lose pore size, acne scars and skin texture that was not perfect and sun spots. But in all vanities sake, I thought I had those bases covered. Well, I did not. The Skin Pen kind of changed my dating life and going out to new restaurants. I decided not to be a shut in. I started going out because I looked better, I felt attractive, even pretty and I don’t use that word lightly. What’s the price on that? Less than a martini and a lame pick-up line from some guy at a bar. Restaurant recommendation: Try the new southern eatery, South, over on 20th Street.
When is the last time you felt like you were beautiful? I had not in years. After an unexpected divorce, competitive career and wanting my husband to look at me and think I was gorgeous in the morning….it all led me to the SkinPen®. This was fate. Sometimes you just have to wait for it to make its move.
Was it worth it? Did it live up to all the hype I’ve read about on-line? Did I look like Kim Kardashian after?
First, it was not the hype that prompted to try this. I felt bad about the way my skin looked. So something had to be done. I actually wanted to have a glass of wine and take the edge off that day I had the procedure because I felt it was appropriate given I was doing something daring. Micro needling my entire face! (MAJOR RECOMMENDATIONS: spend the $20 on the numbing cream).
I know I may come across as a narcissist. I won’t deny that. But after the last not Mr. Right, I wanted to look better. And a pair of jeans or designer shoes was not going to accomplish that. I decided to play Carly Simon’s, “You’re So Vain”, as I drove to my appointment. My skin needed to gavotte like an apricot.
I’ve been known to say screw conventional wisdom and always follow your gut (except when doughnuts are involved). I did not look like Kim Kardashian and realized that I didn’t want to. I wanted to look like a refreshed version of myself. When it comes to skin care, I can without hesitation recommend you try the SkinPen®.
Did SkinPen® help me meet the love of my life?
No, Ryan Gosling did not walk through my door and sweep me off my feet like he did with Rachel McAdams in The Notebook. But I will tell you this. I felt better about myself. And that was worth it. I was only red for a day but when I woke up the next morning, mission accomplished: I had the glowing skin, more even skin tone, and less visible pores that I had long desired. Well, the result may not have actually been that dramatic overnight, but I did notice a difference and my skin continued to improve over the next few weeks. Funny thing is, I felt good about myself and didn’t need anyone to validate that for me.
I am NOT indifferent to my face after this 30-minute treatment. The facial aesthetics team are a lovely group of women and tailored a skin care regimen for me to maintain my results, which I have followed to the T and love what’s happened with my skin. I do have to say that it is a friendly and warm feeling in J. Sweat Plastic Surgery in Sacramento. Not what you would necessarily expect going into a plastic surgeon’s office. I was pleasantly surprised.
In closing, I love the texture, clarity, and tone of my skin. You get what you give in your life my friends. Give yourself the SkinPen®. It gives back in ways you never expected. We don’t need validation from others, we need to feel the best about ourselves. Happy Micro Needling my fellow beauty bloggers.
